STEAM Ambassador Project

In addition to a variety of educational activities, Medesthai partners with professionals whose work highlights art and design thinking at the heart of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEAM).

The STEAM Ambassador role is dynamic, with an “opt-in” nature, meaning that the commitment is renewed with each collaboration, project, or milestone.

Fernanda Cortes is Medesthai’s first Young
STEAM Ambassador

Fernanda is a ceramist and product designer, with an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art, London, where she was one of the first Abraaj Innovation Scholars. Ceramics became her material of choice after she was awarded a BA in Product Design from the Centre for Investigation of Industrial Design, in the Faculty of Architecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

In 2019, we anticipate that we will have the capacity for an additional Ambassador and are therefore already on the lookout for potential candidates. To encourage diversity in our programming, we are looking for individuals whose work explores new avenues, materials, backgrounds and themes to those of the current Ambassador.

Projects and collaborations may take a variety of forms, and depend on the artist, designer, or researcher themselves. For the Ambassador, work should aim to highlight collaborative art and/or design-thinking at the centre of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Ambassador role has a natural "lifespan" of 2-3 years, a period that we believe reflects the amount of time it takes to develop a working relationship, establish and follow up leads (programmatically and regarding funding), and operationalise strategic partnerships.

If an Ambassador wishes to continue with their role for longer, the prospect will be reviewed on a case by case basis. The thought behind this position is that it will pave the way to becoming a member of the Advisory Council, thus opening up the Ambassador opportunity for other young professionals.

The Advisory Council is a pathway to sitting on the Board of Directors in either an executive or non-executive role.

Throughout the process, the primary ‘obligation’ of anyone in this role is to maintain an ethical and responsible practice, as their activities reflect on Medesthai’s reputation by way of association. Consequently, we would expect the same standards from Ambassadors as we would from educators and clinicians (e.g. DBS clearance, adherence to professional norms etc.) especially as so much of Medesthai's work is with children, adolescents, and vulnerable adults.
